Arthur Wheelock Upson born in Camden, New York. While he was a boy, his family moved from New York to Saint Paul, Minnesota in 1894. In 1898 he went to the University of Minnesota. While there, he was the editor of the campus newspaper, the Minnesota Daily. Although illness prevented him from finishing his degree, he was a successful writer and in 1906 he was awarded a degree and became an instructor there. In 1908, he fell from his boat and drowned, a probable suicide.
