spine TINGLING bone CHILLING reads??? what is the best horror book you've ever read? and please no "scary" or "unsettling" books that are actually just about dreading the rise of fascism or complex family trauma. i want to be physically, viscerally frightened. it doesn't even have to be a good book in the conventional sense, i want something that is HORRIFYING bonus points for eerie horror instead of weird horror

I’m halfway through reading The Shining by Stephen King at the moment (review incoming) 🕴️I work a night shift alone at a secluded mountain hotel and it has given me the wobbles a few times. I’m enjoying it a lot.
But really I think film has the edge on books when it comes to horror. Nothing particularly spooky comes to mind.
I remember reading The Castle of Otranto and being really disappointed. I think any older horror novel have been beaten out by cliches and tropes.
I think the only horror book I've read was Bram Stoker's Dracula. I remember finding it scary but I was 13 at the time.
