But yeah, it's probably not worth jumping to any conclusions too quickly based on the limited data - It takes 3-4 dislikes to get into the top 10. And for any book to be high it has to feature in a few bookshelfs, so something like Mistborn #1 forcibly isn't there because no one's added it. Idk if effective weighting would be possible at this scale

Yea I just realized this! It's a bit too heavy on the N to get accurate data. Maybe top 10 most disliked is more than sufficient.

Maybe in the future you could introduce a minimum N (e.g. added to at least 8 bookshelves) then calculate the position based on what proportion of people disliked the book. So like 5 dislikes in 20 bookshelves would be higher than 10 dislikes in 100 bookshelves. But the current model is interesting as it is and I don't want to ask anymore of you than you've already done 🙏

On the Road, 1984, Animal Farm, and Old Man and the Sea are in the bottom 10. Still pissed at our 10th grade English teacher, are we?

I mean, save for Hemingway, they are kinda shit. I'm just surprised Fahrenheit isn't lower than 1984

I will forever defend On the Road as having been life-changing, even if it is a bit silly as a grownup. And even 1984 and Animal Farm are just mid. A Little Life (which deserves its ignominious position) is not better than 1984. I'm also shocked, given the community, how low Ottessa Moshfegh and (per tokyodrifter below) Dazai are rated.
