J. Henry Waugh invented Out Of The Park Baseball 30 years early.
First and only Coover novel I’ve read. In some ways, he built a 17776-style universe here where baseball is the only thing that truly matters. He does the city well, I think. I like the dark, the rain, the puddles, dimly lit restaurants and neon he fondly describes. For someone who likes the sport, the baseball writing is fun too. The ending was unexpected, in a welcome way. I don’t much care about Henry outside of his baseball universe, but darn, boy do I sure care about that baseball universe.
