Read in South Africa lol. Obviously his story is incredible. Also having these like powerful grassroots political groups in an apartheid environment is pretty remarkable.
He kind of stresses a lot how moderately he acted. It's not that clear to me what qualities he had that made him the leader that he was. I would have been interested to hear more on that. Also would have liked to just know more about the rest of south Africa while this all was going on for him but obviously he was in prison. It's not like beautiful prose. But it was interesting.
We no longer have access to an immediately abused working class. Hiring laborers in America is a point of pride (American Apparel) now where in apartheid South Africa it was clearly abuse. But the factories making our goods are apartheid states that we cannot see. It's never enough for a single genius to succeed. South Africans are still suffering.
