Psychoanalysis and Philosophy
Rough brain dump of things that I am interested in or want to learn more about (WIP).
Connections to various parts of philosophy:
Hermeneutics:
Interpretation in psychoanalysis.
Psychoanalysis as a human science.
Other related "hermeneutics of suspicion": Freudo-Marxism.
Phenomenology:
(un)conscious experience
Existentialism's influence on therapy.
Ethics:
Psychoanalysts' thoughts on how we ought live.
History of Philosophy:
Historical pre-cursors to psychoanalysis and related concepts, e.g. the unconscious.
Philosophical criticisms of the psychoanalytic project.
Philosophers, and philosophically-oriented psychoanalysts, of interest to me:
Ricoeur, Marcuse, Rieff, Lear, others. Lots missed here (primarily approaching it via a hermeneutic angle).
Other topics:
The idea of a philosophical psychopathology, in the sense of the ways in which philosophical thought can go wrong? Similar to Hume (see Livingston's Philosophical Melancholy and Delirium: Hume's Pathology of Philosophy), David Stove's "nosology of thought," Neven Sesardic's When Reason Goes on Holiday. Haven't fully formed my thoughts on this yet.
Diagnostic reasoning. As both a scientific practice and oft-used metaphor in philosophy.
For the "royal road," see the Dreams and Dream Interpretation list.
