Philosophical Dialogue

Philosophical dialogue as a genre, but also as a minimal method for doing philosophy.

Brain dump of things to read more about:

  • Socratic dialogue in general.

    • All the associated ideas within early-to-middle Platonic dialogue: Socratic method/elenchus/refutation/testing, definition.

      • Relationship of questioning to eros (can't remember where the connection between questioning and eros takes place, think it is either Phaedrus or Symposium?).

    • Gadamer's recovery of dialectic within dialogue and the associated stuff about rhetoric being the converse of dialectic. Roughly, if one's role in philosophical dialogue is about understanding others' thoughts (via language), then rhetoric can help in communicating our own thoughts, i.e. invention (and the topics of invention).

  • The art of questioning as a core skill in philosophical dialogue and inquiry.

    • The hermeneutic loop between question and answer(s).

  • Conditions of possibility for philosophical dialogue:

    • Community of inquirers (see also Social Epistemology list).

      • Intellectual virtues of inquirers: open-mindedness, humility, and others.

    • Goodwill/friendship (to conversation partners and the idea under discussion).

      • Relationship of agonism (and eristic in rhetoric) to this.

  • Practical skills: Group inquiry, listening skills, conversation skills, nunchuk skills.
